THE CASSAVA PROJECT
We have employed local women to help us with the current cassava project at the Parc. The women help by peeling the roots of cassava plants to be used in the process of making cassava meal. After the cassava roots are peeled they are washed and placed inside a special machine that finely grate the roots into cassava flakes. The cassava flakes are then placed in soaking dams for a few days to soak out the starch. When this process is finished the cassava flakes are drained from these dams where they are placed in a press to remove any excess water. When the excess water is drained, the cassava flakes go through another grinding process to give it an even finer texture which then goes through a dryer. The dried cassava then finally goes through a hammer mill to produce cassava meal that is ready to be placed in bags. 10 ton of cassava roots produces about 2 tons of cassava meal. The dryer used has the capacity to produce 350kg of cassava meal per hour.

FIRST STAGE OF EARTHWORK
As can be seen in the photographs, the first stage of earthworks for the construction of the grain storage facility is in full swing. The soil is in the process of being taken away to ensure that the base on which the grain silos will be built on, is levelled out. The exact location of the storage facilities has been strategically identified as per soil surveys conducted which will help in reducing travelling time from the fields to the silos. Another advantage is the quicker and more effective means of distribution as from the farm to the milling factory markets, further contributing to the ease in solving the grain storage and handling needs of farmers in the Bukanga-Lonzo area.
